Tariq Aziz, a 74-year old former aide to Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death yesterday in Iraq for something. Fariq Abdul Aziz, another former aide to Saddam Hussein, now an aide to the current president of Iraq, was not sentenced to death yesterday and ate the hearty breakfast of someone who has not been sentenced to death.
Big Pharma is now trumpeting certain free swine flu shots at certain locations. Whenever US drug companies say they’re going to do something nice, I stiffen in the same way I do when I go to the price link of something interesting that I thought was free on the Internet. It’s a safe bet that the drug industry’s for-profit racket will be with us for a very long time. What must the people running these drug machines think as they eat their breakfasts about the people who are running to get injected? (If they call it “inoculated” the running becomes a stampede.) A year ago, with the help of government bureaucrats paid to advance their commercial interests, vaccine manufacturers whipped much of the developed world into a frenzy over a swine flu threat that was supposedly going to claim millions of lives around the world. Manufacturing of the vaccine was fast-tracked, an exemption was made to formerly-required testing and safety standards, retailers launched a marketing blitz, and people clamored to be injected with a drug known to contain carcinogens and sometimes cause neurological problems.
By early 2010, the panic had subsided and the manufacturers couldn’t give their unused swine H1N1 vaccine doses away. Investigations were being launched in Europe and elsewhere around the world. Conflicts of interest were being made public. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported that fewer than 12,000 people in the U.S. had died of the swine flu, compared with 36,000 who die each year, on average, of the seasonal flu.
Now, just in time for the time to give thanks, they’re back at it again with a repackaged, absolutely vital something that we must take. A terrible something might happen if we do not get ourselves injected – and for a low low price.
Bertolt Brecht nailed it about the hyenas of profit: “When it comes to marching, many do not know that their enemy is marching at their head. The voice that tells them not to despair is the enemy’s voice and the man who speaks of the enemy is the enemy himself.”
